Why "BCM programming" has no single price
The phrase covers at least four different jobs, and they are not equally difficult.
One: VIN writing. The module has to know which vehicle it belongs to. On most platforms the VIN is stored in the BCM and cross-checked by other modules on the network. A blank or donor module carrying the wrong VIN gets rejected or produces mismatch faults.
Two: configuration and build data. This is the big one, and the one people underestimate. A BCM is a generic piece of hardware that becomes your vehicle's BCM through configuration. Four: feature and option programming. Bench work is not a compromise version of dealer work. For the right jobs it is the better environment, because the module is powered from a regulated supply that cannot sag mid-write and it is accessible on all sides for reading, verification, and board inspection.

What a mail-in bench job cannot do
Every honest workshop has a list like this, and you should be suspicious of one that does not.
It cannot perform steps that require the module to be on the vehicle. It cannot fix a module that is physically destroyed. Deep corrosion through a multi-layer board, fire damage, or a failed processor with unreadable memory are end-of-life conditions. Sometimes data can still be recovered at chip level; sometimes it cannot.
It cannot skip proof of ownership. Nothing touching keys, immobilizer data, or vehicle security proceeds without documentation tying you to the vehicle.
Cloning your original versus programming a blank
This is the fork that decides most of the price, so it deserves to be spelled out.
Cloning copies the identity, configuration, and where applicable the security data out of your original BCM and writes it into a replacement. When it works, the replacement is not a new module that has been set up to resemble yours — as far as the vehicle is concerned, it is yours. Your VIN, your option content, your keys. Programming a blank or new module starts from nothing. The module has no VIN, no configuration, and no security data. Read the last row alongside the first. The dealer's real advantage is not price or speed, it is access to factory online systems for the specific platforms that require it. Everything else on that list favours the bench.
When mail-in is the wrong choice

When the failure is wiring, not the module.
