The F-150 problem, and the three letters that solve it

Ford is where independent shops most often meet the programming wall, for a simple reason: the F-series is everywhere, its modules fail like anything else, and a replacement module on a modern Ford does close to nothing until Ford's software has spoken to it.

The three letters are PMI — Programmable Module Installation. It is FDRS's procedure for exactly the situation in your bay: a module has been replaced, and the configuration that lived on the old one has to arrive on the new one. Where the old module still talked, PMI can capture from it directly; where it was dead on arrival, the configuration comes down from Ford's As-Built database — the per-VIN record of how your specific truck left the factory, option by option.

What a Ford session covers

For $150, booked with a preferred time on the Ford session page:

  • PCM replacement — programming to current calibration, PMI, and the relearns FDRS prescribes afterward
  • BCM, ABS, PSCM and other supported modules — PMI and As-Built configuration so the truck accepts the part
  • Module reprogramming — the TSB fix that is a software level, not a part
  • PATS parameter reset and key functions where the procedure supports them over OBD, as part of marrying a replacement module in the theft chain
  • As-Built edits the software exposes, for configuration corrections

Ford and Lincoln both, FJDS for the older trucks and FDRS for the newer — same session, same price. The usual honesty applies: supported procedures vary by vehicle, module and security requirements, and the session is refunded if the supported procedure can't be completed.

FEPS: the $200 mistake to not make

Here is the wrinkle that separates Ford from every other platform, and it is a hardware fact, not a software one. A range of Ford programming procedures require FEPS — a programming-enable voltage signal on a specific pin — and an interface that cannot generate it simply cannot complete those procedures. No setting fixes it. No software update adds it.

This is why the interface question matters more on Ford than anywhere else, and why we state it exactly as TOPDON does: the RLink X3 (our Domestic Kit, $199) supports Ford FEPS where applicable. The standard RLink J2534 — the bigger, broader, more expensive multi-brand device — does not. On Ford, the cheaper interface is the more capable one. The session, start to finish

The standard remote workflow applies: battery maintainer on (Ford flashes are long enough to make voltage sag a real bricking risk), J2534 in the OBD-II port, laptop online, session opens at your booked time. Straightforward PMI jobs often land in 20–40 minutes; long calibration downloads and multi-module work run longer, and Ford's servers occasionally add their own opinion. Your tech stays with the truck; ours never leaves the software.

A module that no longer communicates at all is a bench job rather than a session — and on Ford that boundary matters, because a genuinely dead PCM cannot answer PMI's capture and needs the As-Built path or bench work first. We triage which one you have before the session, not during it.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is PMI? Programmable Module Installation — FDRS's replace-a-module procedure. It moves configuration onto the replacement, either captured from the outgoing module while it still communicates or pulled from Ford's As-Built record for your VIN, then programs the module to current software.

What is As-Built data? Ford's per-VIN factory record of module configuration — every option, setting and parameter as the truck was built. It is what makes a dead-module replacement recoverable: the configuration does not have to be read from the corpse.

Do I need FEPS for my job? It depends on the module and procedure, which is exactly why we ask what interface you own when you book. If your job needs FEPS and your hardware lacks it, the honest answers are the Domestic Kit's RLink X3 or borrowing bench time — not an appointment that fails at the write.

Can you program a used Ford module? Sometimes — depends on the module and what it retains from the donor. Some accept PMI cleanly; some need bench attention first. Tell us the part before you buy it and we'll tell you which it is.

Will my keys still work after PCM replacement? PATS is part of marrying the replacement, and where the procedure supports it over OBD we run it in the session. Bring all the keys you have; the procedure is specific about them.

FJDS or FDRS — which will my truck need? Roughly: newer vehicles are FDRS, older ones FJDS, and it is our side's problem, not yours — the session runs whichever the vehicle calls for at no difference in price.
