Toyota and Lexus have fitted transponder immobilizers for decades, and they work. The reason manufacturers invest so heavily here is straightforward. The practical problem is that the same system protecting the car strands it when a link in the authentication chain breaks. Which era of immobilizer you have determines exactly where the fix lives.
The three immobilizer eras
Toyota and Lexus immobilizer architecture has moved through three broad stages, and identifying yours is the first diagnostic step.
Early transponder plus separate immobilizer box. The first systems used a dedicated immobilizer control unit — a separate box, often behind the dash near the steering column — that stored key codes and talked to the engine ECU. A transponder chip in a bladed key answered the challenge, and the immobilizer box told the ECU whether to run. Denso ECU-integrated immobilizer. As the platform matured, Toyota moved immobilizer functions into the Denso engine ECU itself. This is the generation that causes the most confusion around replacement ECUs: because the immobilizer secret lives inside the engine ECU, you cannot simply swap in a used Denso unit and expect it to run. Smart-key push-button systems with a certification ECU. Modern Toyota and Lexus vehicles with push-button start use a smart-key system coordinated by a certification ECU, sometimes called the smart ECU. The smart key exchanges a rolling credential with the car, the certification ECU verifies it, and an enable signal is passed to the engine ECU. These systems are the most capable and the most distributed — several modules cooperate — so a no-start on a smart-key car can originate in the certification ECU, the smart key, or the engine ECU, and accurate diagnosis before replacing anything is essential.
Across all three eras the logic is the same: no valid key authentication, no engine start. What differs is which module holds the secret and which one has to agree before the engine ECU delivers fuel and spark.
What actually fails
When a Toyota or Lexus comes in cranking-no-start with the security light active, the cause almost always lands in one of a handful of places.
A dead or damaged transponder or smart key. Chips fail, batteries in smart keys die, and a physically damaged key can turn or be present without answering the security challenge. If a second key still starts the car, the first key is the prime suspect.
A failed immobilizer or certification ECU. On early cars the separate immobilizer box can fail; on smart-key cars the certification ECU can fail or lose its stored key relationships. Either way the car cannot verify a key that is otherwise perfectly good.
Corrupted Denso ECU immobilizer data. A voltage event, a poorly executed flash, or an aging module can scramble the immobilizer parameters stored inside the engine ECU. The ECU is physically sound but its immobilizer table is unusable, so it refuses to enable the engine. This is where bench work becomes the clean fix.

Why a used Denso ECU will not just run
This single misunderstanding sends more Toyota and Lexus owners down the wrong path than any other, so it deserves a precise explanation.
A Denso engine ECU on the immobilizer-integrated generations is not a generic part you can swap freely. It stores the immobilizer relationship — the key data and the security link to the vehicle it came from. Bolt a donor ECU into your car and two things are wrong at once: the immobilizer data inside it belongs to another vehicle, and the security handshake with your keys and, on smart-key cars, your certification ECU will not complete. The legitimate limits — ownership, legality, and mechanical faults
Two rules govern immo-off and any all-keys-lost work and never bend.
First, proof of ownership is required. Turning off an immobilizer or restoring the ability to start a car with lost keys grants powerful access, so we do not perform this work for anyone who cannot show the vehicle is theirs. This protects owners and keeps the service on the right side of theft-prevention principles that the FBI and the NICB emphasize.
Second, the customer is responsible for legal compliance. Immo-off is offered for repair, restoration, off-road, racing, engine-swap, and orphaned-platform uses where legally permitted. It is not a way to defeat theft protection on a normally registered road vehicle where that would not be allowed, and the vehicle owner is responsible for compliance in their jurisdiction and for their vehicle's use.
And an honest scope limit: software does not repair mechanical damage.
