If you are still at the stage of figuring out whether the module is even the problem, start with the ABS and traction light symptom guide instead — spending money before that question is answered is how most people overpay.
Why the same job quotes at $150 and at $1,800
The first thing to understand is that "ABS module repair" is not a single product. Four different things get sold under that phrase, and they are not interchangeable.
One: dealer replacement. The dealer sells you a complete new assembly — in most cases the hydraulic control unit and the electronic controller as one non-separable part — then bills the labor to fit it, the programming to configure it to your VIN, and a scan-tool-assisted bleed to purge air out of the ABS pump and accumulator circuits. On a common domestic truck this lands in the mid hundreds for the part; on a European or a vehicle with an integrated electro-hydraulic brake system it can pass two thousand dollars in parts alone before anyone touches a wrench.
Two: remanufactured exchange. A reman house sells you a rebuilt unit and charges a core deposit against your old one. You are buying a functionally tested assembly, usually with some warranty, at a fraction of dealer price. The catch is availability: reman coverage is deep on high-volume applications and thin on everything else, and the unit you receive is not the unit that came off your car, so identity and coding work may still be needed.
Three: board-level bench repair of your own unit. Somebody repairs the actual electronic failure — a fatigued solder joint, a failed solenoid driver, a corroded pin field, corrupted memory — on the controller you already own, and sends the same unit back. Your original identity, coding, and calibration stay with the part, which removes a whole category of downstream cost. This is what we do, and it is a flat $250.
Four: used donor module. The cheapest part cost and the highest risk. A salvage unit costs whatever the yard charges, but it arrives with the donor vehicle's data, an unknown service history, and no assurance the electronics are healthy. On most modern applications it also needs programming before the vehicle will accept it.
Same three words, four completely different transactions. The number you are quoted mostly tells you which one you were sold.
What actually drives the price
Six variables explain almost all of the spread.
1. Whether the controller is separable from the hydraulic unit
This is the single biggest cost fork. On many designs the electronic controller unbolts from the hydraulic control unit — the valve block with the solenoids and the pump — so you can repair or replace the electronics alone. On other designs the assembly is sold and serviced as one piece.
When they are separable, an electronic-only failure is a cheap fix, because the expensive hydraulic hardware never leaves your car. When they are not, a failed transistor on a circuit board obligates you to buy a valve block and a pump motor you did not need. That is the mechanism behind a large share of eye-watering dealer quotes.
2. Module family and how difficult the electronics are to work on
Different manufacturers, different construction. Some controllers use conventional through-hole and surface-mount construction on FR4 board with a soldered pin field — straightforward to rework. Others use dense multi-layer boards, encapsulated modules, or ceramic hybrid substrates that are far less forgiving.

For pricing purposes, the practical point is that construction determines whether board-level repair is even on the table, which determines whether you are choosing between a $250 repair and a four-figure replacement, or only ever had the replacement option.
3. Whether the vehicle needs programming after the part changes
If the repaired unit is your own original, its VIN and coding are already correct — nothing to program. If a different unit goes in, most modern vehicles require it to be configured to the car: VIN written, variant coding set, sometimes a security relationship with other modules re-established.
On General Motors applications specifically this is a defined, separate job, which is why we price it as one — GM ABS/EBCM programming is $250. Fitting a used or new GM EBCM without that step is the classic reason a replacement module stays dark and the light never goes out.
4. The brake bleed nobody quotes
Here is the cost that ambushes people. On many vehicles, once the hydraulic control unit has been opened to atmosphere — or once air has been drawn into the ABS pump and accumulator circuits — a conventional pedal-and-bleeder-screw bleed will not get it out. The scan tool has to command the ABS pump and cycle the solenoids while bleeding, so air trapped inside the valve block is pushed out.
If you send only the electronics out for repair and the hydraulic unit never comes off the car, this usually is not needed. If the hydraulic unit comes off — for a replacement, or on designs where the controller cannot be separated — plan for an automated bleed at a shop with a capable scan tool. That is shop labor, locally, and it is on your bill regardless of who did the module work.
5. Steering angle and yaw sensor calibration
Stability control needs to know where the steering wheel is centered and what the vehicle's rotation rate is. Depending on the platform, a steering angle sensor zero-point reset, a yaw and lateral acceleration sensor calibration, or both may be required after ABS or stability-control module work. Some cars relearn on their own in a short drive cycle; others require a static scan-tool procedure with the vehicle level and the wheels straight.
Skipping it produces a car that drives normally until the stability system decides the steering input and the yaw rate disagree, then intervenes when it should not. Budget for it as a distinct line item, not an afterthought.
6. Diagnosis — or the cost of skipping it
A wheel-speed sensor, a damaged tone ring, a corroded connector, or a chafed harness will set the same warning lights as a failed controller. The module is often the messenger.

The row that surprises people is the third one. Repairing the unit you already own removes the programming step entirely on most applications, because your original identity and coding never left the building. On a platform where a replacement would require dealer-level configuration, that alone can be the difference between a $250 job and a four-figure one.
The "ABS module repair near me" problem
Search for ABS module repair in Los Angeles, or Houston, or Chicago, or any other metro, and you will find brake shops, transmission shops, and general repair shops. What you will mostly not find is a shop doing board-level electronics repair on the controller, because that is a bench discipline with its own equipment: regulated supplies, rework stations, hot air, microscopes, signal injection for sensor input circuits, and the ability to read and write the module's memory.
Very few general repair shops own that. Most of the ones advertising ABS module repair locally are doing exactly what you would do — sourcing a reman or new unit and fitting it.
This is why the geography does not matter. The part is small, it comes off the car in an hour on most applications, and it fits in a small box. You ship it to a bench from anywhere in the United States, the bench does the electronics work, and it ships back. Your local shop still does the two things that genuinely have to be local — removal and reinstallation, and the in-car bleed and calibration if the hydraulic unit came off.
That division of labor is the whole model. It is not a workaround for not having a shop in your city; on this specific job it is usually the better arrangement, because the person doing the electronics work does that and only that.

Before you spend anything: prove it is the module
The cheapest ABS repair is the one you do not do. Work through this before buying any part.
Read the codes properly. Not just the generic OBD-II side — you need the ABS module's own codes, which requires a scan tool that talks to the ABS controller specifically. A basic code reader that only sees powertrain codes will tell you nothing useful here.
Sort the codes into families. A single wheel-speed sensor code on one corner points at that corner, not at the module. Codes on multiple wheels can be a module fault, a shared ground, or a power supply problem. Internal control module faults, pump motor circuit faults, and valve relay faults point at the module. Implausible-signal codes are ambiguous and need live data.
Look at live wheel-speed data. Drive it with the data streaming. A sensor that drops out at low speed, spikes, or reads zero while its neighbors read road speed is a sensor, wiring, or tone ring problem — and a cracked or debris-packed tone ring is a mechanical fault that no module repair will touch.
Check the connector and grounds before anything else. Corroded pins, a spread terminal, a chafed harness section, or a corroded chassis ground produce exactly the same intermittent behavior as a failing module. Inspect under magnification, check pin tension against an unused cavity, and back-probe rather than piercing insulation.
Check battery and charging voltage. Low system voltage sets brake and stability codes on a lot of platforms. Fix the electrical basics first or you will chase ghosts.

What the numbers say about why this matters
Four data points that frame the decision.
Anti-lock brakes and stability control are not optional equipment. Electronic stability control has been required on light vehicles in the United States since the 2012 model year under the federal motor vehicle safety standard for stability control, published by NHTSA and codified in the Code of Federal Regulations. Because stability control is built on the ABS hardware, a dead ABS module usually takes stability control down with it. This is not a warning light you can reasonably live with.
The safety benefit is large and well measured. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has estimated that electronic stability control reduces the risk of a fatal single-vehicle crash by roughly half, with an even larger effect on fatal rollover crashes. That is one of the biggest single-technology effects in the crash-avoidance literature.
The vehicles needing this work are old enough that replacement economics rarely make sense. Average light-vehicle age in the U.S. fleet has climbed to well over twelve years according to statistics compiled by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. A $1,500 assembly on a vehicle worth a few thousand dollars is not a repair most owners will authorize, which is exactly the gap board-level repair fills.
Most drivers cannot absorb a four-figure repair. Consumer research published by AAA has repeatedly found that roughly a third of U.S. drivers could not cover an unexpected vehicle repair bill without borrowing. And brake-related concerns consistently rank among the larger complaint categories in the NHTSA owner complaint database, while long-running reliability surveys from Consumer Reports list brake and electronic-system trouble spots among the more commonly reported problem areas on older vehicles. Is the controller separable from the hydraulic unit on your application? If yes, board-level repair of your own unit is on the table and is usually the cheapest complete path. If no, you are choosing between a new or reman assembly, and the price floor is set by the hydraulic hardware.
Is your original unit repairable, or damaged beyond it? Fatigued solder joints, failed solenoid drivers, corroded pin fields, and corrupted memory are repairable. A burned-through inner board layer from a severe overcurrent event, a cracked ceramic substrate, or a physically damaged valve block is not.
